Abstract Submission Guidelines 2025

The President’s Cup is a research competition held annually during the national ACSM Annual Meeting. The President’s Cup is organized with the assistance of the Student Affairs Committee and ACSM national staff. Each regional chapter will select one student based on the quality of presentation at their regional chapter annual meeting and this student will represent the chapter in the President’s Cup competition at the national ACSM Annual Meeting. A panel of judges, using an established judging rubric, will select the ultimate winner. ACSM will provide a $1,200 stipend to each regional chapter winner. The purpose of this is to support student attendance and travel to the ACSM Annual Meeting to present their work at the national-level competition. The stipend will be paid post-meeting after the competitor has participated in the event.

President’s Cup Format

Students will give an oral presentation (with PowerPoint slides) lasting 5 minutes, followed by 3 minutes for questions. Each of the following categories be evaluated on a scale of 1 (Unsatisfactory) to 5 (Exceptional), which is consistent with the standardized rubric used to judge the national competition. This is an individual award for students only.

1. Significance: How well the project relates to the mission statement of ACSM, which
is to “advance and integrate scientific research to provide educational and practical
applications of exercise science and sports medicine.”
2. Innovation: The novelty of the project, especially relating to the use of new
methodologies, studying of under investigated populations and/or addressing
emerging problems relating to exercise and sports medicine.
3. Project Design: The ability of the methodologies used to address the research
question and hypothesis. Additionally, the appropriate use of experimental design
and statistics to test the hypothesis.
4. Ability to Respond to Questions: Ability of the student to demonstrate knowledge
of the literature related to their field of study as well as demonstrate critical
thinking for future studies.
5. Presentation Design and Presentation Skills: Clarity of the presentation and description of research project.

If interested in participating in the President’s Cup, please indicate that during your abstract submission.

All Movement Matters: Physical Activity and Exercise Across the Lifespan for Health and Human Performance

The Northland Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine requests session proposals for the 2025 Annual Meeting to be held in Mankato, Minnesota from April 3-5, 2025.

This meeting will bring together undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and professionals in the field of exercise science to discuss and share insights on the importance of physical activity and exercise across the lifespan. This meeting aims to bridge the gap between research and practice, showcasing innovative approaches and practical applications in exercise science for optimizing health and performance throughout the lifespan and in special populations. Any content or projects related to the broad exercise science umbrella will be considered and are welcomed.

Attendees will explore cutting-edge research, innovative interventions, and practical strategies for integrating physical activity into daily life and structured exercise programs to optimize health and performance for various populations.
Consider submitting a proposal to share your expertise, scholarly work, or evidence-based practices to change the way we work to actively understand and focus on physical activity and exercise with our clients, our athletes, our clinical populations, or in our communities.

Presentations should be 50 minutes in length with approximately 5 minutes for questions and discussion. Presentations will be in person on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.

Saturday, April 5, will follow the traditional Northland ACSM Meeting tutorial format where sessions are interactive and include a more hands-on or movement-focused approach. If you feel your proposal is aligned with this format, please identify your choice accordingly.

Proposals must be submitted by email to Corey Selland. Please include a single PDF document with the following information:

  • Title
  • Speaker names, position titles, and contact information
  • 2-3 Learning Objectives
  • Abstract
  • Materials, space, and technology needs

Proposals can be the same as those submitted to the National ACSM Annual Meeting. Collaborative presentations with more than one speaker are encouraged. Submitters will be notified of decisions by October 1, 2023. Presentation slides and short speaker bio will be due by March 1, 2025. Unfortunately, the Northland Chapter will not be able to provide travel funds for accepted speakers.

Questions can be directed to Corey Selland President-Elect at corey.selland@mnsu.edu.
